Restrictions on fire escapes in San Francisco... and the world!
A reader asks:Is it okay to put plants and lawn chairs on my fire escape?
Our reply:
NO! Don't put anything on a fire escape... it could be your only way out in case of a fire. There may be smoke, and you may not be able to see how to escape if you need to get out quickly. If there is something blocking your way out it could also make you trip and fall. It is not worth your life to have extra storage for chairs or to be able to look at plants. I realize that some of the fire excape ladders are ugly but maybe a better idea might be to paint it.
