Sketches and San Francisco real estate

A reader asks:

I picked up the San Francisco Chronicle to look at open houses and noticed all the brokerages seem to prefer using drawings in their advertising. With the new digital camera it seems like it would be easy enough to take photos, so why do San Francisco Realtors use sketches instead for advertising?

Our reply:

There are several reasons for this. First of all, you will notice most of the ads are in black and white, so color photos aren't as useful for this purpose. Second and probably the most important reason is that in a drawing the artist can remove distracting telephone, electrical lines, light poles, street signs, cars or sometimes even trees to better show off the exterior of the property. There are a number of sketch artists in the city who make a living from this type of service. One of the better known local artists with his own website is Clay Seibert.
